He was senior lecturer on physics. For many years he taught physics in the Department of Physics at the Higher Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

    Ivan Petkov founded Department of Physics at the Higher Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

    He was board member of the Society of the Physicists in Bulgaria.

    He take part in the organising committee of the first national education on physics conference, held in Gabrovo town in 1973.

    Ivan Petkov organized the first national conference "Physics and Production" in Kazanlak town in the next year (1974). During this conference he offer Palace of Physics to be created in Kazanlak.

    He became the first director of the Palace of Physics in Kazanlak.
