Annual Reserch Report 2003

Dear Colleagues,

This annual report presents an account of the last year of the first mandate of the present Institute Administration. The landmark of this year was the election for Fellows of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Two of our coworkers: Nicola Sabotinov and Alexander G. Petrov received the highest scientific position of Academicians (Fellows) of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

In general, the completed mandate of the Institute Administration was regarded a success by the Administrative Council of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Director of the Institute was re-elected. In this respect, it is our great pleasure to acknowledge the commitment of our administration and staff to various responsibilities, scientific and administrative as well. Despite difficult economic conditions, it is this devotion of the staff that keeps the Institute going. Support by Development Fund of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, National Council "Scientific Studies", NATO, European Union, is gratefully acknowledged. Scientists working on internationally funded projects enjoyed a far better perspective and recognition of their results.

During the year 2003 Professor Alexander Derzhanski (Corresponding Member of BAS) was elected Honorary Member the Institute of Solid State Physics. This is our tribute to his great role in putting the grounds of the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Liquid Crystal Physics in the Institute and in the Bulgarian physics. M. Gospodinov, R. Djulgerova and Chr. Popov received the George Nadjakov Sign of Honour 1st degree (gold-plated medal on a ribbon), while N.Tonchev and A.G. Petrov received the 2nd degree Sign of Honour. Teams lead by D.Nesheva, L.Spassov and S.Andreev received diplomas for the best scientific achievements of the year.

Alexander G. Petrov
